5 Tips to Prevent Ingrown Whiskers

Ingrown whiskers and hairs are the worst! No man wants to deal with razor bumps, redness, and infected whiskers. Fortunately there are ways to prevent ingrown hairs and whiskers. It all comes down to your skin care routine and shaving technique. The curlier your beard is, the more likely you are to experience ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Here are five tips to prevent ingrown whiskers.

1) Exfoliate the skin one to three times a week. You can do so with a simple face scrub found online or in a local drugstore. These grainy exfoliation treatments help remove dead skin cells, oil, trapped whiskers, and debris. This way your skin is better primed for a clean and close shave.

2) Use a quality shaving creme, gel or oil. The key is to keep your skin well hydrated while shaving. You need to soften the beard and create a good moisture barrier. This helps reduce redness and irritation, and allows the razor to glide with minimal effort. It will reduce drag, and ensure a better shaving experience.

3) Use a sharp, clean razor. If you are using an old cartridge or dull razor blade, you will not get a good shave. Dull blades cause drag, and they can even cause cuts and nicks. Try replacing your cartridge after every five shaves. If you have a straight razor, be sure to strop it regularly.

4) Always shave with the grain of your beard. You can see which direction your whiskers grow. If you shave with the grain, you will not see as many razor bumps and ingrown whiskers. Some men like to shave against the beard growth, because it cuts closer, but this is a common mistake.

5) Always use a moisturizing aftershave that is free of drying alcohols. Even though alcohol was/is a common ingredient in aftershaves, it is not good for the skin. Not only does it dry and irritate freshly shaven skin, but it also causes free radical damage, which leads to signs of aging.
