DIY Peel Pads for Men

Exfoliation is an important part of skin care and anti-aging. It helps minimize surface lines and wrinkles, lessen dark spots and sun damage, and stimulate blood flow to the skin. There are many exfoliation products and treatments to choose from at this point. These products can be broken down into two basic categories, which include physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. Physical exfoliation products are basically scrubs, loofas, and brushes that slough off dead surface cells. As for chemical exfoliators, these include alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids. As opposed to physically scrubbing off dead skin, these treatments help break down and dissolve dead surface skin.

DIY peel pads for men are a simple and convenient option for chemical exfoliation. Some examples are Jack Black DIY Power Peel Multi-Acid Resurfacing Pads ($38), Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Peel Pads ($45), Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel ($86), and Malin + Goetz 10% Glycolic Acid Pads ($48). These are essentially pre-saturated pads that can be used once a week or more, after cleansing the skin. A serum and/or moisturizer can be applied after using a peel pad treatment.

Contrary to what you may have heard, DIY peel pads for men are actually less irritating than many face scrub products. This is because there is no friction when you apply the hydroxy acids. Unless you have sensitive skin, peel pads may be the way to go for exfoliation and anti-aging. However, it's important to not overdo it! It's also wise to use these exfoliation pads at night, since your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight and damaging UV rays.

Note that each DIY peel product is different. While some of these exfoliation pads require that you rinse the skin after 5-15 minutes, others do not. So it's imperative to read the instructions carefully. Lastly, make certain you apply a sunscreen each morning with an SPF of 15 or greater. It's actually recommended to use SPF30.
