Men's Skin Care Ingredients

The ingredients in the skin care products you use are important. First of all, you can't simply rely on the one or two ingredients mentioned on the box or front label. It's important to address the complete ingredient list, which is found on the back label or the packaging. This full list of ingredients will tell you everything that is used in the men's moisturizer, face serum, aftershave balm, sunscreen, or anti-aging treatment.

You can determine how much of an ingredient is used by where it falls in the list. For instance, Water is typically the first ingredient listed, which means the skin care product contains more water than anything else.

Two or three key ingredients are commonly posted on the front label of a skin care product for men. These ingredients might be Aloe Vera, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Shea Butter, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids. However, this does not tell you much about the ingredients as a whole. At this point, you should examine the complete ingredient list, and see where those "key ingredients" fall in the list. You may discover that they come at the end of the list, which means the concentrations are low, and probably not very effective.

Let's talk about some beneficial ingredients for men's skin.

Aloe Vera Extract (calms, soothes and hydrates the skin)

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (these include Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic, Citric, and Malic acids that help exfoliate the skin)

Retinol (a form of Vitamin A that increases skin cell turnover and reduces signs of aging)

Vitamin C (increases collagen production, brightens the skin, and helps reduce sun damage)

Alpha Lipoic Acid (helps reduce inflammation and combats free radicals)

Green Tea Extract (loaded with antioxidants to fight free radical damage)

Beta Hydroxy Acid (this is Salicylic Acid and it helps clear the pores to reduce acne blemishes and breakouts)

Chamomile (calms and reduces redness)

Coenzyme Q10 (helps with skin repairs and anti-aging)

Grapeseed Extract (provides antioxidant protection)

Hyaluronic Acid (binds moisture to the skin to reduce dryness)

Kojic Acid (a mushroom extract that reduces melanin production to minimize age spots and dark marks)

Peptides (assist with anti-aging and wrinkle reduction)

Shea Butter (a rich moisturizer)

Squalane (helps hydrate the skin)

Vitamin E (heals and reduces damage from free radicals)

Witch Hazel (an antiseptic that tones the skin and tightens the pores)

These key ingredients are all found in men's skin care products.

So, the next time you go shopping for men's skin care products, be sure to take a good look at the ingredient list before buying. Some common irritants that you should avoid are dyes and artificial colors, fragrances, parabens, and drying alcohols like SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol. These ingredients can do more harm than good.
